ABOUT SPEA RELATED |
Our Mission To prevent suicide and promote recognition of adolescent depression through education and alliances with community partners. Click here to download the SPEA Organization trifold brochure. What Does SPEA Do? Suicide is preventable. Its causes are treatable. Friends are the first line of defense in preventing suicide among teens. Since December 2000 SPEA has delivered its proven program, Recognizing Adolescent Depression and Suicide Prevention, to 68,000 students in 97 Northeast Ohio high schools. We teach students how to identify friends who may be suffering from depressive illness or bipolar disorder. We teach teens to recognize the warning signs of suicide. We teach teens what to do and where to get help. Our objective is to cause at-risk students to seek and receive treatment from a mental health professional. Five per cent of the students who participate in our program seek the help of a mental health professional, and treatment saves lives. Evidence-based research proves our programs success. In addition, we have trained more than 5,000 physicians, school counselors, social workers, nurses, clergy, teachers, home health aides, law enforcement officers and parents in recognizing adolescent depression and suicide prevention. SPEA also trains "Gatekeepers" in Suicide Prevention and hosts an annual "Survivors of Suicide" conference. |
